Frequently Asked Questions - Alumni
Which alumni are eligible to participate in the mentoring program?
University of Pittsburgh alumni who work in the business field are eligible to participate in the program. The majority of alumni are from the College of Business Administration.
Who are the mentees in the program?
Current College of Business Administration students, ranging from freshmen to seniors, across all of the business majors at Pitt Business. The program is limited exclusively to these students.
What are the expectations of alumni mentors?
Alumni mentors are expected to provide guidance and advice to students based upon their professional knowledge and expertise. You aren't expected to know everything. The wisdom you can share with students based on your own experiences is extremely helpful and can't be taught in the classroom.
How much of a time commitment is the program?
The amount of time you put in is up to you. However, for most alumni mentors it represents a very minimal time commitment.
How does the mentoring process work?
Students are responsible for initiating contact with their alumni mentors. You will receive a notification when a student requests you as a mentor. You then have the option to accept or decline the invitation. Your name is not visible to the student, should you decide to decline the invitation.
How many students can I mentor at one time?
You can mentor as many or as few mentees as you want. It is up to you to set the limit. Once that limit has been reached, your information will no longer be visible in the system as an active option for alumni mentoring.
How do most alumni mentors interact with their mentees?
Alumni have interacted with students via email, phone, or in-person. It is up to you and the mentee to decide.
How come I haven't been contacted yet by a student for mentoring?
The platform is set up so that students are responsible for initiating contact with alumni mentors. It may be a little while before you hear from a student, especially during slower periods of the year such as the summer months.
I've had a wonderful experience in the program and want to share a testimonial of my experiences. How do I do that?
Contact Greg Latshaw, Associate Director of Student Engagement, at firstname.lastname@example.org. He will collect the information for your testimonial.
